RCAF Air Weapons Control Coverage Expansion
(NORAD modernization)
Project Type
Project Replace
Objective
The RCAF Air Weapons Control Coverage expansion (RACE) project will replace the technically obsolescent collection of 189 paired DND/CAF owned UHF radios installed at 81 NAVCAN transmission sites located across Canada, and install new equipment at other key locations in Canada’s North to expand radio coverage with a networked digital UHF radio capability for continued use by both NAVCAN and DND/CAF.
Requirements
This revamped shared radio system will continue to provide Air Traffic Service (ATS) Ground-Air-Ground (GAG) communication for operators at both NAVCAN control centers and as a priority service to the Canadian Air Defence Sectors (CADS). Its primary purpose will remain to enable verbal communication with domestic and foreign military aircraft flying in Canadian airspace and who utilize primarily UHF radio capabilities for this function.
