Tactical Narrowband Satellite Communications-Geosynchronous
Project Type
Project Replace
Objective
The Tactical Narrowband Satellite Communications – Geosynchronous (TNS-GEO) project will deliver a Beyond Line of Sight Ultra-High Frequency (UHF) narrowband satellite communications (SATCOM) capability to the Department of National Defence (DND) and the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF). TNS-GEO will leverage the existing Mobile User Objective System (MUOS), a military SATCOM system owned and operated by the United States (U.S.) Department of Defence (DoD), to fulfil DND/CAF’s tactical narrowband SATCOM capability requirements. Arctic communications above 65° N will be provided through the Enhanced Satellite Communications Project – Polar (ESCP-P).
Requirements
TNS-GEO will provide users with a guaranteed, reliable, secure, and globally available narrowband SATCOM capability to support voice communications and low data rate applications between 65° North and 65° South latitudes at all longitudes. TNS-GEO will also enable interoperable communications with key allies and provide sufficient capacity to address CAF’s current global and domestic communication demands over a 15-year period.
